George and Atlas

Morehead Street, Redfern (no number known)
In 1886-1887 George and Atlas are living in Morehead Street, Redfern.
Marshall Street, Moore Park (no number known)
In July 1887 George and Atlas are living in Marshall Street, Moore Park.
George deserts Atlas and she reports this to the police.
Wife desertion’ and ‘child desertion’ was a crime. Deserted
Wives and Children Act (1837) allowed a deserting husband to be sued
for maintenance.
Their daughter Charlotte was born in 1887. Does this have something to
do with him leaving her?

Pyrmont Street, Pyrmont (no number known)
In June 1889 George and Atlas are living in Pyrmont Street, Pyrmont.
George deserts Atlas again and she reports this to the police. Their
daughter Contradina was born in 1889. Does this have something to do
with him leaving her?

12 Arlett Street Rushcutters Bay, now Edgecliff – see photo 1
In August 1891 George and Atlas are living at 12 Arlett Street,
Rushcutters Bay, now Edgecliff, in a small cottage. The cottage is still in
original condition. George deserts Atlas again and she reports this to the
police. Their son George was born in 1891. Does this have something to
do with him leaving her?

Raglan Street, Waterloo (no number known)
In May 1897 Atlas again reports to the police that George has deserted
her and the children. She is now living in Raglan Street, Waterloo. No
house number is given.
George is arrested by the police but is discharged, with no prosecution.
Is this because he agrees to return to his family? For whatever reason at
some stage George returns to the family.

30 Cornwallis Street, Redfern
In 1903-1904 Atlas and George Little lived at 30 Cornwallis Street,
Redfern. 30 Cornwallis Street has been demolished and the whole block
and those on either side of it are now open land.

3 Wyndham Street, Alexandria
In 1910 George and Atlas Little are living at 3 Wyndham Street,
Annandale. This is next to the (former) Boundary Hotel on the western
side of Wyndham Street, near the corner of Boundary Street.
The Boundary Hotel no longer exists. It was the Technology Park Hotel
for a while, but currently a monstrosity building! 3 Boundary Street has
been incorporated into the current building.

178 Wells Street, Redfern
In 1911 George and Atlas Little are living at 178 (or 128?) Wells Street,
Redfern. The numbering is confusing in this street, it stops, then re-
starts. Needs more investigation, but no current site of 178 – or 128 –
Wells Street can be found.

12 Garden Street, Alexandria

Atlas Little lived there at the time of her death in 1925. The house no longer exists.

Robert Hartley Little (senior) and Josephine Hilma Johnson

69 Jesson Street, Alexandria

Robert Hartley Little senior was born there in 1894. It appears the address no longer exists.

St Pauls church, Cleveland Street, Redfern

Robert Hartley Little senior and Hilma Josephine Johnson married there in 1911

25 Park Road, St. Peters, now Sydenham
The family were living here in 1928. The property has been demolished
and is now part of a park in the street. Atlas Alma Josephine marries a
neighbour, Leslie James Johnson, who lived at 34 Park Road. The
Johnson’s house is still in original condition from the outside – and has a
lovely gate.

The Little family were living here in 1930-1931. In that year living in the
property were:
– Robert Hartley Little, bootmaker
– John Herbert Little, labourer
– George Little (Robert’s father), pensioner
– Alma Josephine Little, home duties

The house is still there, a terrace. Looks in original condition.
Park Road is a short walk from Sydenham Station.
At some time between 1931 and 1933 the family move to 487 King
Street St. Peters; this part of King Street is now known as Newtown.

Date range: 1933 – 1959
Today this is Fox and Scout clothing shop. Note the door to stairs on the
left of the plate glass window. This would have led to accommodation
upstairs. The family may have owned this property, or they may have
leased the property and it was owned by someone else.
After 1959 the family is no longer associated with this property and it is
owned by a C. Murchison.
There are a lot of photos of King Street Newtown on the City of Sydney

For many decades Newtown was part of the City of Sydney Local
Government Area.

In 1933 living at 487 King Street are:

– Alma Josephine Little, home duties
– Robert Hartley Little junior, labourer

In April 1942 George Little, Robert Hartley Little’s father, dies at the
property. He hasn’t appeared recently on the NSW Electoral Roll, this
may have been because he was suffering from dementia and may have
been removed from the Roll.

– Alma Josephine Little, home duties

8 Flora Street, Erskinevillesee photo 4
From 1927 (maybe earlier) to 1935 Hilma and Thomas Jones are living
at 8 Flora Street, Erskineville. The little cottage is still there in original
condition.
They are living there as a de facto, then a married, couple. Thomas
Jones dies at the home in May 1935.

161 George Street, Erskineville
By 1937 Hilma had moved to 161 George Street Erskineville. She died
at this home in 1944.

The property has been demolished, as has the
next-door property no. 159 and a new home built across these two
properties, which is now known as 159-161 George Street.
However looking at the neighbouring property, 163 George Street, which
is still an original cottage, you can see what the property would have
looked like.
